Incentives and evolution: ALIFE 2023 - Day 2
Each death from COVID-19 was, in some ways, a failure to apply collective intelligence (CI). Better modeling, participatory policymaking, and community engagement could likely have 1) increased trust in public health agencies, 2) suggested less burdensome and more cost-effective interventions, and 3) supported better preventative policy design years before the world locked down. Today, we explored how CI can be used to design better institutional incentives that lead to better decisions.
An introduction to artificial life: ALIFE 2023 - Day 1
Artificial life is a provocative and profoundly ambitious field. It challenges things most of us take for granted: that humans are unique, that consciousness is inscrutable, and that life itself is distinct from other physical processes. “We really want to create artificial life,” said a slide from ALIFE 2023’s opening remarks today. “Anyone can create it. We want to release the recipes for it and change the world.”
Building communities: FOSSY Day 3
Sometimes, projects fall victim to their success. An unexpected cash windfall or user influx can pressure a collective’s social and technical infrastructure. Anyone trying to shepherd a decentralized, collaborative project might feel overwhelmed sometimes. But help is out there. “When I was a boy,” said Mr. Rogers, memorably, “and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would tell me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” Today at FOSSY 2023, we’re considering designing inclusive, sustainable spaces to encourage the diverse contributions that drive CI.
Defining Open: FOSSY Day 2
The internet’s most powerful engine of collective intelligence is at an uncertain point. The free and open-source software (FOSS) community emerged and refined its principles over twenty years during the early internet, co-evolving with regulation and technology. Decentralized movements need time to grow and adapt. But to adapt to advanced AI, FOSS needs 20 years’ worth of evolution in just a few months.
Designed for us: FOSSY Day 1
Within computer science, the free and open-source (FOSS) community has long provided an oasis for developers looking to protect the public good. The software that powers significant areas of our lives might be designed for us, understood by us, and tailored to our needs. Or… they might not. Open sourcing allows users to create something useful, then reap the benefits of collective intelligence (CI) as a decentralized community comes together to improve it. Bugs are found, features added, and UI smoothed. Win-win-win.
Hybrid Human-AI Conference: Day 5 of Summer in Munich - Humans in the loop
If someone asked me to describe the most important messages from HHAI 2023, I would tell them that technology design is a deeply social process. We do not get to decide how to use AI tools on our best day – well-rested, when we're in sync with the other department heads, when we're patient and attentive. We make these calls with our current brains. Exhausted, distracted, disconnected, and often totally clueless!

Speaking the truth, plainly and clearly, is hard. Especially in science, where overconfidence in a result leads to disaster and under-confidence delays progress on urgent problems. Across the field(s) of human-AI interaction, this “calibration problem” rears its head. Some of the most important work being done today involves improving how AI tools can explain their behavior - and how we can explain AIs to each other. Frank van Harmelen calls this “meaning negotiation” and told me the field must progress long before we agree on terms.

HHAI, even more than other conferences I've attended, has a clear sense of self. We are here for one reason - to study how AI can support human goals and human flourishing. That requires interdisciplinary study, especially from psychologists, computer scientists, and HCI professionals, but it leads to a unity of purpose that encourages openness and discourages 80s-style ego posturing. My only regret is that the material is so interesting I won't have time to explore as much of Munich!

When I describe Abhishek’s and my work on augmented collective intelligence, often, people perceive it as exciting but very niche. But upon a closer look, our topic contains multitudes - more to study than anyone could do in a lifetime. How do human teams work together? How do they decide? What is artificial intelligence, and what kind of capabilities are available? What capabilities might be available soon? What happens when we make hybrid human-AI teams -- to the problem being solved, our sense of purpose and autonomy, our organizations, society, and our career paths?

It was bittersweet to realize the final day of the Collective Intelligence Symposium had arrived. Given the scope of our interests, we all had started conversations we had no hope of finishing. How can we apply insights from the animal kingdom to our work in organizations? What can we know and not know about AI’s likely impact on our work? The only answer is to keep conversing with the bright people we’ve met and puzzle them out together.

Systems, put simply, are boundaries with constituents. Our world and our bodies are systems of systems, from cities to cells. The reason to study systems is to understand how the levels impact each other, what commonalities exist between them, and how interventions can be designed to target the right level.
On Day 1 with the Santa Fe Institute, I didn't find a solution – but I found a gold mine of insights that have left my head spinning and brilliant partners to push these ideas around with.

This week, I've flown to Santa Fe to join two hundred others for a first-of-its-kind symposium. "Collective Intelligence: Foundations + Radical Ideas" is an experimental non-conference that brings together young researchers, industry leaders, and interdisciplinary thinkers to learn and discuss the nature of group intelligence – how it emerges in insect swarms, brain cells, and sports teams – and how we can harness this knowledge to improve organizational decision-making. Artists, entrepreneurs, and futurists are here, too; it's that kind of electric energy.
